Mingun is a side on the Ayeyarwaddy River not far from
Sagaing and Mandalay. The Mya Theindan pagoda, built in 1816 by the crown
prince who later became King Bagyidaw, has a unique architecture. It is in
the form of the Sulamuni Pagoda on top of Mt.Meru, which is the Center of
the Universe according to ancient scripts and beliefs. The seven wavy rows
of concentric terraces represent the seven mountain ranges surrounding
Mt.Meru.
MINGUN
Mingun is located at 11 km upriver from Mandalay on the opposite bank of the Ayeyarwaddy
River. It is noted for its huge unfinished Pagoda and the enormous "Mingun
Bell", the largest ringing bell in the world. A short boat trip to Mingun
from Mandalay is a pleasant one with plenty to see along the way.
MONYWA
About 135 km to the west of Mandalay, Monywa is the
commercial centre of Chindwin Valley. Places worth visiting around Monywa
are - Thanboddhay Pagoda and Kyaukka Village, which produces its own
distinctive kind of lacquerware.
